3D Stereoscopic Viewing

  • (interlaced) Zalman Trimon ZM-M220W - 22" - widescreen TFT active matrix LCD

    • The Zalman solution uses "passive glasses."  The monitor and software coordinate to interlace the display, which the glasses filter to create a 3D experience.

    • The Zalman is a robust and low-cost solution for 3D stereoscopic viewing.  Most modern openGL capable video cards from NVidia, ATI and Intel can handle the task. With the correct cables, this solution even works when using a 2009 MacBook Pro laptop.

  • (120Hz) NVidia 3D NVision with:
       (entry) NVidia Quadro 580; entry level cards begin at approximately $99
       (better) NVidia Quadro FX 3800/4800
       (best) NVidia Quadro Q5000/Q6000
    • NVidia's 3D Stereo NVision solution uses "active glasses".  The screen refreshes at 120Hz in coordination with the glasses.  The refreshing of the glasses actively filters the display creating a 3D experience.  These glasses require power either through batteries or a cable.

    • PyMOL does not work in 3D on GeForce cards. The GeForce cards do not support OpenGL stereo, they only support DirectX and 3D BlueRay stereo.

  • JyMOL requires:
    • Sun's Java Virtual Machine (JVM) version 1.5 or 1.6 to run applets and applications
    • Sun's Java Develpoment Kit (JDK/SDK) version 1.5 or 1.6 to compile new JyMOL-based applets and applications
    • Applet deployment through Java WebStart using the browser plugin2 is suggested

  • Important Notes
    • During JyMOL development, testing of various open- and closed-source JVMs on Linux was carried out. Sun's JVM/JDK is the only consistently operational option across Windows and Linux.
    • This list is updated as technologies improve.
    • In the latest release of Apple's proprietary JVM (1.6u20), Apple broke a fundamental feature of openGL rendering in browsers. Thus, JyMOL is not officially supported on the 10.6 Apple JVM until further notice.
